17-year old gets Otago Rally scholarship

Seventeen-year old Hamilton rally driver, Lukas Ramsay, has been awarded the Otago Rally scholarship for 2022.

Ramsay was chosen from a strong list of candidates, and will receive free entry into the Otago Rally with a package worth in excess of $2500.

A member of the Hamilton Car Club, this will be Ramsay’s first time competing in the Otago Rally, having registered for the 2022 NZRC as a Junior rookie.

“I started rallying as a young spectator supporting my Dad (Chris Ramsay) and have been involved in the sport since I was born,” he said in his application.

“Working for two years full time allowed me to buy my current car, a 2012 Ford Fiesta R2, myself. This also is given me a great opportunity to compete in the NZRC.”

Otago Rally committee member, Tony Johnston, said he was thrilled with the quality of the applications.

“Once again, we received a good number of high quality submissions from excellent candidates which made picking a winner very difficult.

“We were impressed with Lukas’ professional attitude and commitment at such a young age, and are pleased to be able to contribute to his rallying future.”

The Otago Rally is based in Dunedin and will be held on April 9 and 10.
